The residents had repeatedly appealed to the municipal corporation for a long-term solution.

There is a renewed hope for a permanent solution to the long-standing rainwater drainage issue in Sector 65 (Phase 11), Mohali. After nearly two years of delay, the municipal corporation has finally initiated work on installing a proper pipeline system to prevent rainwater from entering residents’ homes during the monsoon.

Advocate Ram Kumar Chauhan, Sanjeev Joshi, Dheraj , Dharam Singh Sumandeep residents of most flood-affected area of Sector 65, claimed they have been facing serious drainage issues for years. “When the corporation failed to act, we filed a case in the High Court. It was only after the court directed immediate action on January 13, 2025, that this project finally got underway.”

The project was officially launched by local MLA Kulwant Singh in Phase 11. For years, residents have endured damage during the rainy season due to the absence of an efficient drainage system. Rainwater would flood homes, ruining furniture, clothes, and other belongings — resulting in financial losses running into lakhs. Additionally, problems like sewer overflows made the situation worse.

The gravity of the issue is evident from the corporation’s previous efforts, where pumps were deployed to remove excess rainwater during heavy downpours. However, this solution proved ineffective. “Last year, the pumps failed to operate during the rains, leading to water entering our homes,” said a local resident. The failure sparked public protests, and fire brigade teams had to be called in to help remove the water. Schoolchildren and office-goers were particularly affected by the chaos.

The residents had repeatedly appealed to the municipal corporation for a long-term solution.

Although a proposal was passed in 2023, the work remained stalled. It was only after a petition was filed in the High Court — and following the court’s directive on January 13, 2025 — that the project was finally set in motion.

As per municipal officials, a 36-inch pipeline is currently being laid in the residential sector. This will be followed by the installation of a 56-inch pipeline stretching from the Sector 65 temple to the golf range.
The corporation expects this to offer a permanent fix for the issue.

Locals are urging authorities to finish the work with speed before the monsoons. “If the work isn’t completed in time, we might have to suffer the same problems again,” said one concerned resident.
