Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Sunday criticised the BJP-led Haryana government for obtaining from the Supreme Court a stay order on the proposed widening of the Ghaggar river from Makraud Sahib to Karail, and urged the Centre to intervene in the matter to put an end to the repeated hardships faced by the people.

After reviewing the condition of the Ghaggar at Khanauri Headworks in Sangrur district, Cheema said, “The Punjab government is committed to a permanent solution to the recurring flood threat posed by the Ghaggar river. Widening the river can provide a long-term solution, but Haryana has obtained a stay order from the Supreme Court on the widening of the river from Makraud Sahib to Karail in Punjab.”

“To put an end to the repeated hardships faced by the people of Punjab, it is essential that the central government fulfil its responsibility towards the people and direct the Haryana government to have this stay withdrawn. This will enable the Punjab government to widen the river and strengthen its embankments in the interest of public safety,” the minister said.

When asked to comment on the views expressed by the Punjab Finance Minister, a senior officer from the Haryana government said they would examine the matter “with an open mindset and in the spirit of national interest.” The officer further stated, “Haryana believes that all issues should be resolved amicably, so that the people of both states do not suffer.”

“There is no need for people to panic. They only need to remain alert and cooperate with the Punjab government and the district administration. The water level of the Ghaggar river today is 743.7 ft, while the danger mark is 748 ft,” Cheema said, adding: “The situation is fully under control.”

The minister said the district administration has made adequate arrangements to deal with any eventuality. “Around 2 lakh sand and soil bags have been kept ready. Places where breaches occurred in 2023 have been strengthened on a priority basis, and embankments have also been widened to ensure machinery moves easily if required,” he said.

The minister emphasised this is the time to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with one another. “Every individual should extend whatever help they can to those in need. While the Punjab government and the district administration have already made the necessary arrangements, citizens too should come forward to support each other,” he said.

Cheema appealed to the people “not to believe any kind of rumours.” “In case of any difficulty, residents should immediately contact their village panchayat, which in turn should promptly reach out to any civil or police administration officer so that the problem can be resolved quickly. Representatives of the Punjab government and officers of the district administration are present in the field, and no one will be allowed to face any inconvenience.”

Deputy Commissioner Rahul Chaba said in case of any possible flood-related emergency, people could contact the flood control room numbers: Irrigation Department 87250-29785 and District Administration 01672-234196.
