In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions in the region, all schools in Chandigarh will remain closed on Tuesday. The announcement comes alongside a strict order issued by District Magistrate Nishant Kumar Yadav, banning the entry of people and animals into lakes, choes, rivulets, ponds and other water bodies across the city for the next 60 days.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), points out that continuous heavy rainfall has caused water channels such as Patiala ki Rao and Sukhna choe to overflow, posing a serious threat to human lives and animals.
The District Magistrate observed that residents often enter these water bodies for swimming, fishing, or other purposes, and some even bring along cattle and pets — activities that could prove fatal in the current situation.
“No person shall himself go or take cattle/pet animals inside the nalas, choes, rivulets, lakes, ponds and other similar water bodies,” the order mentioned.
Any violation will invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The restrictions will remain in force from September 2 till October 31, the order stated.
Meanwhile, exceptions have been made only for Disaster Management Teams, police, military and para-military forces, and other government officials engaged in rescue or emergency duties. With schools closed and safety restrictions in place, the Chandigarh
Administration has urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary exposure to waterlogged areas.
