The Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112), Chandigarh’s integrated helpline for police, health and fire emergencies, since its launch in September 2019, has responded to more than 17.64 lakh calls and attended 5.86 lakh events.
The project was inaugurated on September 20, 2019 by the then Union Home Minister of India.
According to the police, designed to provide quick assistance during emergencies, ERSS-112 was initially limited to police, medical and fire services. Over time, it has been expanded into a multi-utility platform catering to wider citizen needs, and at present the system integrates services such as the cybercrime helpline (1930), e-Beat, NDMA alerts, the women and child WhatsApp helpline (1091), senior citizen helpline (1090), women helpline (181), child helpline (1098) and Rail Madad, making it a comprehensive safety network for the Union Territory (UT).
According to official data, the helpline saw the highest call volume in its first year, from September 2019 to September 2020, when it handled more than 4.40 lakh calls and attended over 1.07 lakh events. The following year, during the pandemic-hit period of 2020–21, call numbers fell to 1.99 lakh, with 75,635 events recorded. However, the service has since witnessed a steady recovery and rise in usage.
Between 2021 and 2025, ERSS-112 consistently registered over 2.5 lakh calls each year, with an average of nearly one lakh events being attended annually. In 2025 till September, 3.10 lakh calls and 97,355 events were recorded.
Police officials said that the consistent performance of ERSS-112 demonstrates its efficiency as well as its importance as the first point of contact during emergencies.
The platform not only connects residents swiftly to police control rooms, fire stations and hospitals, but also ensures timely intervention in sensitive cases involving women, children and senior citizens, a police official said.
