A day after two men were killed and another was seriously injured after their motorcycle was hit by a speeding car in Chandigarh, the families of the victims have sought CCTV footage of the incident from the police.

Vikas, 17, and Dhruv, 22, residents of Sector 56, and their friend Ankush, 19, a Palsora resident, were on the motorcycle when the vehicle met with an accident near Chandigarh’s Sector 40/41 light point on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. While Vikas and Dhruv died, Ankush sustained multiple injuries.

On Tuesday, Dhruv’s uncle, Ajay Kumar, a driver, alleged that the police were initially hesitant about taking action against the accused. “Now the police have registered an FIR and arrested the accused. But since the police are claiming that the motorcycle was on the wrong side of the road and they were not wearing helmets, we have sought CCTV footage,” he said.

Vikas, a class 10 student, and Dhruv, who was undergoing vocational training, were cremated after the postmortem, Kumar said. They were returning from attending a Mata Jagran in Sector 56, he added.

“Right now, we do not know if they were on the wrong side of the road. We are yet to verify it from CCTV footage,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile, Ankush alleged that their bike was hit by a “speeding white Hyundai i20 coming from Sector 40”. “A local passerby saw us and informed the police control room. Dhruv and Vikas lost consciousness immediately and were rushed to PGI. I was taken to GMSH (Government Multi-Speciality Hospital) Sector 16, for treatment,” he added.

Ramdayal, the Station House Officer of the Sector 39 police station, said that the accused, Shubham, 26, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, was arrested after the number plate of his car bearing a temporary registration number was found at the accident spot. He was later released on bail.
