Blackouts declared in Tricity; schools & colleges closed, exams postponed

As India-Pakistan tensions continue to worsen, authorities have imposed blackouts in the Tricity region (Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula).

“Keeping in view the ongoing emergency situation, all the residents are requested to immediately respond to the sound of the siren and switch off all the lights… (They) also are advised not to venture outside or on the rooftops,” a statement by Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said.

Similar blackouts were also ordered in Mohali and neighbouring Panchkula, which falls in Haryana.

The Mohali administration on Thursday also declared its jurisdiction as “No Flying Zone” for unauthorised drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Mohali District Magistrate Komal Mittal, while exercising her power under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, ordered that the whole jurisdiction of Mohali shall be “No Flying Zone” for the purpose of flying of unauthorised drones and UAVs from May 8 to July 5.

However, this order shall not be applicable on law enforcement agencies including police, paramilitary, air force, SPG personnel, and officials authorised by competent government authority.

Schools closed

On Thursday evening, officials also announced that all schools in the Tricity region will remain closed on Friday and Saturday.

In a post on microblogging site X, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said, “In view of the evolving situation, it is hereby ordered that all schools, colleges and universities — government, private and aided — across the entire Punjab shall remain completely closed for the next three days”.

PU postpones exams

The Paniab University (PU) has postponed exams scheduled for May 9, 10 and 12, The controller of examinations, PU, Chandigarh, confirmed the development in a notice. New dates of the exams will be announced later.

Meanwhile, all flights to and from Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh, remained suspended on Thursday.
