Behbal Kalan firing incident: Rs 1-crore compensation for victim’s kin, says Katju’s report

Justice Markandey Katju (retd) on Saturday submitted his report on the police action against agitators at Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura last year.

During protests against allegations of desecration of the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib, the police fired against protesters in which two people died.

The “commission” recommended that families of the two killed, namely Krishan Bhagwan Singh, a resident of Niamiwala, and Gurjit Singh, a resident of Sarawan, should be compensated with Rs 1 crore each.

Certain groups had approached Katju after they claimed that they had no confidence in the commission established by the government. The government notified Justice Jora Singh (retd) Judicial Commission is yet to submit its report.

“Notices were issued to authorities of Punjab government including Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and DGP to either appear in person or send their representatives to put on record their side of events,” said former Director General of Police (Jails) Shashi Kant. He added that none appeared.
