Embroiled in controversies for one reason or the other,Ranjit Bajaj — son of high-profile bureaucrat parents,father B R Bajaj and mother Rupan Deol Bajaj,has seen as many as eight cases,including drug abuse to kidnapping,vehicle lifting and assaults,slapped on him since 1996.

In the last 14 years,Ranjit’s reputation has been marred by recurring incidents that have portrayed him as a spoilt brat of the IAS couple.

A past mired in controversies
Case 1:
September 26,1996: The first case that involved him came to light when he,along with his two friends,allegedly assaulted a head constable,Daya Ram,of the Chandigarh Police. Thirteen years later,he was acquitted in the case by a lower court.

Case 2:May 5,2000: At a checkpost,a police team arrested a friend of Ranjit and recovered a pistol,live cartridges and two swords from the car that his friend was driving. The car was registered in Rupan Deol Bajaj’s name. The arms licence had B R Bajaj’s name on it and Ranjit’s photograph.

Case 3:May 17,2000: Ranjit was accused of forcibly taking the car of Sunny Garg,son of an industrialist. He allegedly took Sunny with him to his house in Sector 16 and assaulted him with iron rods. The complaint read Bajaj and his friends snatched cash,cell phone and a cheque book from Sunny and demanded Rs 20 lakh for his release. His mother’s intervention is said to have resolved the matter. The FIR was quashed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court later.

Case 4:May 5,2001: Ranjit and his friend Naresh were beaten up by a group of six youths led by Jagatinder Pal Singh. The next month Ranjit reportedly set Bagga’s car on fire to take revenge.

Case 5:January 6,2003: A case of car theft was slapped against him when he allegedly stole a Maruti car to help his friend Maninder with spare parts for his car.

Case 6:October 17,2008: Ranjit’s name figured in the inquiry conducted by the Chandigarh police to probe the nexus between the police and drug peddlers. Six police officers also figured in the report.

Case 7:August 28,2009: The Chandigarh police booked Ranjit and arrested his three private security guards on charges of assaulting and misbehaving with policemen outside a discotheque at Sector 26 in early morning hours. Ranjit,however,pleaded innocence in the case by saying he did not assault anyone,in fact he was the one who was stopping people from fighting.

Case 8:January 30,2010: The Panchkula police booked him in an attempt to murder case when he and his security guards entered into a scuffle with Gurmohan Singh Bedi,son of M M S Bedi,a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Bajaj absconding;counter complaint against Gurmohan Bedi
While the Panchkula police have failed to arrest Ranjit Bajaj in the attempt to murder case,a girl,who was accompanying the accused at the time of the incident,has given a written complaint to the police against Gurmohan Bedi,the victim. Talking to Newsline,Inspector Jangsher Singh,Station House Officer,Chandimandir,said in her complaint,the girl,Heena Singh,alleged that Bedi was drunk and had passed obscene remarks at her which led to the scuffle. “However,we could not find anything substantial in the complaint after investigating the matter. The girl has only mentioned that she is a resident of Sector 15. She has not furnished anymore details about herself,” informed Singh. Meanwhile,the police conducted raids at many places in Panchkula and Chandigarh but have failed to trace Ranjit or his two security guards who were accompanying him.
