A district court in Chandigarh Thursday convicted five persons involved in the murder of a 21-year-old man in 2021.
The five — Bharat, Gurdev, alias Guru, Anil Kumar, alias Lalla, Pradeep Kumar, and Rahul– all residents of Mauli Complex, were convicted by the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Sandhir. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced on Friday.
According to the police, the case was registered at Mauli Jagran police station under sections of rioting and murder.
The FIR was lodged on the complaint of Amit Kumar’s father, who stated that his son worked at a fast-food outlet in Mauli Jagran along with his friend Sahil. About 15 days before the incident, Amit had borrowed a scooter from one of the suspects that met with a minor accident. The damage triggered hostility from Bharat and his friends, who began threatening him.
On April 16, 2021, the accused allegedly came to Amit’s house, with Bharat carrying a knife. When Amit was not found at home, they left but later attacked him elsewhere, stabbing him multiple times.
The victim, Amit, also a resident of Mauli Complex, was murdered despite compensating for the minor damage caused to one of the accused’s scooters. He had already paid Rs 1,500 towards the repair but the accused continued to harbour enmity and eventually killed him. He was rushed by his friend Sahil to Manimajra hospital and then referred to Civil Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, where he succumbed to his injuries.
During the trial, the defence counsel argued that the accused have been falsely implicated in the FIR.
However, after hearing the arguments and going by Sahil’s testimony, and evidence produced in the court, the court held the accused guilty.
