Despite change in weather conditions, diarrhoea cases at Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, continue to rise with 103 fresh cases being reported on Saturday. These include 41 children and 62 adults who had reached the medical camp set up for such patients. With this, the number of people suffering from diarrhoea in the area alone has reached nearly 2,000.

Though the Municipal Corporation officials kept claiming that there was nothing wrong with the drinking water being supplied to the area, eight samples of water collected from area have already been found unfit for human consumption.

Meanwhile, gauging the seriousness of the situation,UT Advisor KK Sharma met the head of the Department of School of Public Health,PGI,on Friday, and asked them to lend their expertise in controlling the situation.

Consequently, the Department has collected 30 samples from various sensitive areas, including Dadu Majra,Sector 38 and Mauli Jagran. The report of the 30 samples collected is expected to come on Monday.

Professor Rajesh Kumar,Head,Community Medicine and School of Public Health said,“It is a water-borne disease and we have advised the administration to stop the current drinking water supply to the area and make alternative arrangements. We have also asked the MC to discontinue the drinking water supply from the current source, that is a tube well.” There were four tubewells in the area and all were interconnected.

The officials concerned have been asked to snap the inter connectivity among the four tubewells,so that the contamination from one tubewell does not travel to others,he added.

The officials have also decided to keep all the dispensaries of the Municipal Corporation open on Sunday. However, doctors will not be available all the time in the dispensaries as they are posted round the clock in Vikas Nagar,Mauli Jagran and other sensitive areas. Similarly, health centres under the control of Chandigarh Administration will also remain open on Sunday.
