The Crime Branch wing of Haryana Police has arrested two people who allegedly cheated at least eight people by swapping their debit cards under the pretext of assisting them to withdraw money from ATM kiosks in Panchkula. The police said that six of the victims were cheated at Raipurrani, a suburban town in Panchkula district.
The police have seized 31 ATM cards of various banks including HDFC, Kotak Mahindra, ICICI, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank, and Central Bank of India, from the fraudsters identified as Jagmohan Singh, 36, and Pappu Kumar, 38, of Uttar Pradesh. They also confiscated a motorcycle without a registration number plate.
“As per the modus operandi, the accused deliberately selected ATM kiosks in rural areas for the crime. They knew that most elderly people and women in rural areas are still not familiar with withdrawing money through ATMs. Jagmohan Singh and Pappu Kumar made the best of the situation and pretended to assist such people. After withdrawing the cash in front of the victims they handed over another debit card keeping the original one with them. Now that they knew the Pin of the card, the fraudsters easily withdrew cash from the victims’ accounts,” explained an officer.
The police said that the identity of the two men was established on the basis of CCTV footage installed at ATM counters. The men are in police custody for four days.
The Crime Branch team headed by Inspector Mohinder Singh Dhanda nabbed the men who were standing near an ATM kiosk in Raipurrani. A case was registered at the Raipurrani police station.
