With 15 global positioning system (GPS)-enabled ambulances at its disposal, the General Hospital is hopeful of providing better services to residents of Panchkula township, particularly those staying in the periphery. The hospital also plans to quicken its reaction time to distress calls as GPS is also helping them monitor the movement of these ambulances.

The ambulances are part of the state government project started across various districts, which also has a toll free number,102,to avail the services of free ambulances. The hospital, which has set up a control room in the premises itself, also monitors the movement of these ambulances 24×7.

The authorities pointed out that the number of ambulances was earlier limited and the hospital also faced the problem of tracing them during emergencies, especially those pertaining to areas like Raipurrani,Morni etc.

“Now,with the GPS installed,we know at which health centre the ambulances are parked and if they have moved out,the route they have taken. As these vehicles are now spread across the district, patients in villages are the ones who have benefitted the most. Since November,we have attended to around 1,200 distress calls,of which around 600 were received from rural areas,” informed GH-6 Civil Surgeon V K Bansal.

It was the GPS system which facilitated their response to the accident in which a college bus fell into a rivulet near Ghaggar around two weeks ago. The hospital, which has two ambulances parked at Raipurrani, pressed them into service immediately,as a result of which 15 students could receive timely medical aid at GH-6.
