At least 10 police personnel, including two senior officers, were injured after violence erupted during a bike rally organised at Sambalpur town on the eve of Hanuman Jayanti on Wednesday evening.
According to police, some miscreants hurled stones at the bike rally that started from Dhanupali Police Station Chhak and was crossing Motijharan Chhak, leading to a clash between two groups. The bike rally was organised by the Hanuman Jayanti Samnwaya Samiti, which celebrates the Hanuman Jayanti on April 14.
There were also reports of vandalism and arson as a shop and a motorcycle were set on fire during the clash. The police resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the mob. Police said the miscreants also damaged some of the vehicles parked on the roads in the tension-gripped area.
Asked whether it’s a communal clash, a senior police officer said it would be known only after a detailed inquiry.
