The prototype of distance-to-go (DTG) train made in China for Bengaluru Metro’s the Purple Line, connecting Whitefield and Challaghatta, reached Peenya depot on Sunday.
The six-coach DTG train is set to bring relief to commuters on the heavily crowded Purple Line and Green Line (Silk-Institute-Madavara). Ahead of launching the train for passenger operations, the prototype would have to undergo a series of static and electrical circuit tests followed by dynamic tests on the mainline, Bengaluru Metro said.
China’s CRRC Corporation was awarded a contract to supply 216 new coaches for Bengaluru Metro’s 73.95-km Phase 2 project’s Purple Line (Line-1), Green Line (Line-2) and Yellow Line (Line-3). Of these, 126 coaches (21 six-coach trains) are meant for the Purple and Green Lines while 90 coaches (15 six-coach trains) are for the Yellow Line (RV Road–Bommasandra).
CRRC has partnered with Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL) to make trainsets locally, complying with local manufacturing norms.
With the arrival of one protype of the six-coach train from China, the remaining 20 trains will be manufactured by Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems at its Uttarpara facility, officials said.
According to BMRCL officials, the first DTG train from TRSL is expected in the last quarter of this year while the delivery of all trains for the Purple and Green Lines will be completed by the first quarter of 2027.
Meanwhile, TRSL has dispatched its first driverless trainset for the Yellow Line and it is expected to reach the Hebbagodi depot by January 20. The prototype train from China was also delivered to the depot in February last year.
The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is now exploring the option of starting operations on the much awaited Yellow Line connecting the Electronic City corridor with two trains, officials said.
