Bengaluru police book lawyer who hurled shoe at Chief Justice of India B R Gavai in Supreme Court

Bhaktavachala, a 73-year-old lawyer based in Bengaluru, requested the police to register a case against lawyer Rakesh Kishore to ‘protect the judiciary’.

Two days after a 71-year-old lawyer allegedly hurled a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai at the Supreme Court in New Delhi, the police in Bengaluru registered an FIR on Wednesday against him on a complaint filed by another lawyer.

The Vidhana Soudha police booked Rakesh Kishore under sections 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty) and 133 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person, otherwise than on grave provocation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

In his complaint, Bhaktavachala, a 73-year-old lawyer based in Bengaluru, requested the police to register a case against Kishore to “protect the judiciary”. “On October 6, one advocate, Rakesh Kishore, committed an offence by throwing a shoe at the dias in court hall no 1 at the Supreme Court of India. The Chief Justice of India, B R Gavai, and Justice K Vinod Chandran were seated in court hall no 1 at the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi. The complainant requests to register a case against the accused to protect the judiciary, etc.,” Bhaktavachala was quoted as saying by the FIR.

The police said the case would be transferred to the jurisdictional police station.
“The FIR was registered as a zero FIR, but the incident took place in New Delhi. We will be transferring the case to the New Delhi police,” a police officer said.

People from various walks of life have condemned Rakesh Kishore’s act. In Bengaluru and Mysuru, the bar associations protested before courts seeking action against the lawyer. In Mysuru, the bar association also boycotted court proceedings. Activists in Karnataka’s other cities also protested demanding action.
