The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday arrested an alleged Popular Front of India (PFI) master weapons trainer, who was living under an assumed identity in Karnataka’s Ballari, for his involvement in the Nizamabad terror conspiracy case.
The NIA identified the man as Nossam Mohamed Yunus. When his house was searched in September 2022, Yunus, who used to work with his elder brother in an inverter business, was found to be absconding along with his wife and two minor sons. In Ballari, Yunus had assumed a new identity, Basheen, and a new profession as a plumber, the NIA said.
According to NIA, Yunus provided weapons training to youngsters recruited by the PFI in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions. He was also the PE training state coordinator for these two states in the Nizamabad case.
The NIA investigations have revealed that Yunus had shifted his entire family from Andhra Pradesh and was hiding out in the Cowl Bazar area of Ballari district. Yunus, who has allegedly been giving evasive replies during interrogation, has named one Shaikh Ilyas Ahmed as also being involved in the PFI weapons training programme, the NIA said. Ilyas is currently absconding.
The Telangana Police had initially registered an FIR in the Nizamabad terror conspiracy case on July 4, 2022. According to the FIR, 26 people and others allegedly conspired to wage war against the government of India.
Last year, the Centre had imposed a ban on the PFI and its associate organisations for five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
