Nine Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials, including engineers, were injured after a fire broke out at the civic body’s quality control laboratory in its headquarters in Bengaluru.
The injured have been identified as chief engineer Sivakumar, executive engineers Kiran, Santosh Kumar and Vijayamala, assistant executive engineer Sridhar, first division assistant Siraj, operator Jyoti, project management and consultant Srinivas, and computer operator Manoj.
BBMP commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said that the incident took place at around 5 pm on Friday. Fire brigade and police officials were rushed to the spot and the victims were taken to the burn ward at Victoria Hospital for treatment. According to BBMP officials, the fire broke out during benzene testing at the quality control room.
“We haven’t ascertained the reason of the fire yet. The electrical inspectorate is yet to conduct the inspection. We will know about the extent of the burn injuries of the victims only after the treatment,” the BBMP chief said.
Officials said that no files or documents were destroyed in the fire.
According to Victoria hospital officials, three victims sustained eye injuries while all the nine suffered around 40% of burns. Dr Ramesh TK, head of the burns ward at Victoria Hospital, said, “There is definitely risk involved. We cannot rule out the danger. The victims have suffered 30-40% burns, while three suffered eye injuries.”
