In an attempt to encourage voting across Karnataka, the Mysuru district administration has decided to shut tourist spots on April 26, when the Lok Sabha elections begin in the state.
Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, popularly known as the Mysuru zoo, has announced that it will remain closed for the public on April 26 along with the Karanji lake.
The state government has declared public holidays on April 26 and May 7, when the state will vote in two phases.
While the voter turnout in the Mysore Lok Sabha constituency was 70.7 per cent, officials are concerned about numbers in other constituencies, especially in Bengaluru.
“With elections being held on Friday, we see many of them planning long weekend trips. We want people to vote,” an official said.
Also, some hotels and restaurants in Mysuru have planned to offer discounts for those who visit after casting votes.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Bangalore South witnessed a turnout of 53.70 per cent, Bangalore Central 54.32 per cent and Bangalore North 54.76 per cent.
The overall voter turnout in Karnataka stood at about 68 per cent.
