Karnataka’s Opposition Janata Dal (Secular) on Tuesday condemned a proposal to rename a road in Mysuru after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, citing the MUDA case against him.
The Mysuru City Corporation issued a public notice on December 13 seeking public objections, if any, to renaming the stretch between Sri Lakshmi Venkataramana Swamy Temple Circle and Royal Inn Junction at Metagalli as Siddaramaiah Arogya Marga after a decision was made in this regard at a council meeting of the corporation on November 12.
The notice issued by the executive engineer (east) of the corporation has provided 30 days for the public to submit objections. According to sources, the decision to rename the road was made following an application filed by MLA K Harish Gowda, who represents the Chamaraja constituency in the city, and other Congress leaders.
Siddaramaiah hails from Mysuru district and is serving his second term as chief minister.
The JD(S) said the decision to rename the road after the chief minister was condemnable. In a post on X, the party said Siddaramaiah was accused number one in the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) land case and facing a Lokayukta investigation.
“There is no elected body in the Mysuru City Corporation. The officials appointed by the Congress government have taken this decision to pay off their debts,” the party said, adding that renaming a road after Siddaramaiah would amount to an insult “not only to the historic city of Mysuru, but to the entire state”.
