The police in Karnataka’s Raichur district said over the weekend they have arrested a man for allegedly killing his 17-year-old daughter because of her relationship with a man from another caste.

According to the Raichur police, the alleged honour killing of the minor girl took place seven months ago, but came to light after a court directed the girl’s father to produce her before it. The police announced the arrest of the man, a farmer from the Kuruba community, last Saturday.

The police said the man’s daughter was allegedly in a relationship with a man called Hanumantha, who hails from a Scheduled Tribe group. The man reportedly asked his daughter to discontinue the relationship owing to Hanumantha’s “lower caste” status, but the girl objected to it.

They said the couple eloped last year to get married, but were caught by the girl’s family. The girl’s father then filed a case against Hanumantha, and he was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Hanumantha was arrested, and released on bail three months later.

On September 29, 2024, the farmer, his wife and their daughter went to their farm, and the mother returned home early. According to sources, an argument broke out between the father and the daughter over her relationship, and the man hit the girl’s head with a stone, resulting in her death. Later, the man allegedly carried the body on a two-wheeler, and dumped it in the Krishna River. The man reportedly threatened his wife not to inform anyone about their daughter’s death.

Her death came to light when the court asked the prosecution to direct the victim to appear before the court in the Pocso case. A police officer said, “We asked the father to bring the girl to court, but he gave vague reasons and did not appear for three hearings.”

The court then directed that the minor girl must appear in court proceedings. The man claimed that his daughter was missing, so the court asked the police to register a missing persons case. During the probe, the police found that the farmer had allegedly killed his daughter.
