With only one month until the Karnataka Assembly elections, the Congress party Sunday appointed former Lok Sabha member BN Chandrappa as the working president of its state unit.

According to a party statement, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Chandrappa as working president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), headed by D K Shivakumar.

The appointment of the former MP comes after Karnataka Congress working president R Dhruvanarayana passed away last month.

The Congress has so far declared 142 candidates for the upcoming elections. On Thursday, the party’s second list was announced, which saw it accommodate some of those who jumped ship from the BJP and JD(S). The party has also fielded some fresh faces in some constituencies.

The elections for the 224-member Assembly will be held on May 10 and results will be declared on May 13.
