Pro-Kannada groups have called a 12-hour statewide shutdown Saturday, March 22, to protest the alleged assault on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi.

The shutdown from 6 am to 6 pm, called by Kannada Okkoota, an umbrella organisation of various pro-Kannada groups, was announced after the attack on a KSRTC bus conductor by those purportedly affiliated with pro-Marathi groups in Belagavi in February. The conductor was allegedly assaulted for not conversing in Marathi, which has intensified existing linguistic and regional tensions in the area.

What is likely to be affected?

Education institutions: The bandh coincides with ongoing examinations, leading to concerns among students and parents. While some educational bodies have expressed moral support for the bandh, they have not confirmed closures.

Transport unions: Associations representing Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) employees have expressed solidarity, indicating potential disruptions in bus services.

Ride-sharing and auto-rickshaw unions: Ola, Uber Owners and Drivers Association, along with several auto-rickshaw unions, have pledged support, suggesting limited availability of these services during the bandh.

Commercial establishments: The hotel and film industry representatives have extended moral support without committing to full participation and their services are likely to continue.

What are the protesters’ demands?

The Karnataka bandh organisers have outlined several demands including banning pro-Marathi groups. The outfits have called for a prohibition on organisations like the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) within Karnataka, accusing them of perpetuating violence and disrupting harmony.

They have also sought the implementation of measures to safeguard the rights and dignity of Kannada-speaking individuals, especially in border areas like Belagavi.

They are also opposing the proposed division of Bengaluru into multiple administrative zones, which some believe could dilute Kannada cultural identity. Additionally, the cab driver and auto-rickshaw associations are also protesting seeking a ban on two-wheeler taxi services, which they argue is affecting their business.
