A dowry harassment case has been filed against national award-winning director Manjunatha S, popularly known as Mansore, in Bengaluru.
According to the complaint filed by Mansore’s wife at Subramanyapura police station on January 25, her family gave Rs 9 lakh to the director in cash and ornaments when they tied the knot in 2021. Besides, the family spent Rs 30 lakh on the entire wedding.
The woman said Mansore and his mother took good care of her in the initial days, but later he assaulted and tortured her demanding money from her family to support his filmmaking. The victim, a manager at a multinational company, said she gave her entire salary to Mansore. “My family later took a loan of Rs 10 lakh to give Mansore,” the woman alleged.
A police officer said Mansore was served notice in the wake of the complaint, following which he gave a statement and submitted a counter-complaint stating that his wife was not of sound mental health and that her brothers were using her to blackmail him.
The filmmaker also alleged that his wife harassed and assaulted his mother, and was counselled after she attempted suicide, an officer said.
The police have registered a case against Mansore under sections 3 ( giving or taking dowry) and 4 (demanding dowry) of the Dowry Prohibition Act and Indian Penal Code sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 498A (husband or husband’s relative subjecting woman to cruelty).
Mansore has directed several Kannada movies including ‘Act 1978’, ‘19.20.21’, ‘Nathicharami’ and ‘Harivu’. In 2015, he won a national award for the best Kannada film for his movie ‘Harivu’. The movie also received a Karnataka state award for best production and direction.
