IMD issues orange alert for coastal Karnataka; heavy rainfall in three districts till July 8

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday announced an orange alert for coastal Karnataka, with a forecast that Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts will receive heavy rainfall till July 8.

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) in a statement said that the intensity of rains in the state will come down after July 8. “Active monsoon conditions are very likely to continue till July 8, resulting in widespread rains over most districts across the state. Thereafter, rains are likely to come down over the state,” it said.

On Tuesday afternoon, coastal Karnataka districts were put on red alert by the IMD. The Dakshina Kannada district administration announced the closure of schools, anganwadis and pre-university colleges on Tuesday. Even on Wednesday, they remained closed.

The Dakshina Kannada Disaster Management Authority said two houses in Ullal were partially damaged and one house in Mulki was severely damaged in the heavy rains on Tuesday.

Maximum rainfall was recorded at Paduvari in Udupi district with 221.5mm on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mangaluru and Mulki received 150 and 170 mm of rainfall on the same. “Southwest monsoon was active over coastal Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka and normal over South Interior Karnataka on Tuesday,” IMD said in a release.

Bengaluru on Tuesday received 1.3 mm of rainfall.
