The Legislative Council’s Special House Committee recently asked the Karnataka government to take control of the Bangalore Golf Club and the Bangalore Turf Club premises, suggesting that they be transformed into green spaces and recreational walking areas.

In its report submitted to the government, the N Ravi Kumar-led Committee said the government can relocate the clubs to alternative sites near Jakkur Aerodrome or Kunigal.

Established in June 2020 to scrutinise the operations of clubs in Karnataka, including those within Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, the committee has proposed that the Karnataka Regulation of Entry to Public Places and Regulation of Clubs Bill be passed to regulate club activities and fees.

In its report, the committee highlighted violations by the Bowring Club, regarding unauthorised construction on heritage premises. It also pointed out the Cosmopolitan Club’s commercial rent practices. The committee has also proposed the relocation of the Century Club from Cubbon Park, among others.

Moreover, the committee has recommended amending the Karnataka Societies Registration Act to ban discriminatory entry policies based on attire.

The Special House Committee has also advocated that MPs, MLAs, and MLCs be given membership in two clubs of their choice.
