In a first for Karnataka, a 370 mega watt (MW) gas-based Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) is set to be commissioned near Yelahanka in Bengaluru. The unit is set up by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) and will be commissioned in the second week of July, according to Energy Minister K J George.
The CCPP, compared to Single Cycle Power Plant, generates 50 per cent more electricity. “The plant will generate 236.82 MW through a gas turbine generator and 133.25 MW through a steam turbine generator,” the minister said in a statement. The pilot production cycle of the unit was already complete and the unit was ready for commissioning.
According to George, this is the first time a government organisation will produce gas-based electricity. Foundation stone for the Yelahanka CCPP was laid by Siddaramaiah, who was the chief minister even in 2016. “He will inaugurate the plant,” George said.
Another project, a waste-to-power generation plant at Bidadi will also start operations in the last week of July. The project is being implemented by the KPCL and the BBMP at a cost of Rs 260 crore. The unit will process 600 tonne of waste daily to generate 11.5 MW of electricity. Most of the work was completed and the power generation trials will be completed soon, a statement issued following a review meeting by the minister said.
“At this stage, electricity is being generated using dry waste. Once operational, the power generation unit will help address the issue of waste disposal to some extent,” George said.
