Kannada film star Darshan Thoogudeepa, often called ‘Box Office Sultan’ of Sandalwood, on Tuesday was taken into custody in connection with the murder of 33-year-Renukaswamy who was allegedly killed over his social media posts against the actor’s wife. However, Darshan, son of veteran actor Thoogudeepa Srinivas, has been into controversies right from the early days of his acting career.
In 2011, Darshan was arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting his wife Vijayalakshmi and was lodged in prison. However, the marital discord was later settled outside the court and he issued a public apology.
In 2021, Darshan, a resident of Mysuru, was accused of assaulting a waiter at a hotel in his home district. However, no case was registered. A police source then said that the waiter was allegedly paid Rs 50,000 to cover up the case. The same year, Kannada film producer Bharat lodged a complaint against Darshan for threatening him.
In January 2023, the forest department raided Darshan’s farm house in Mysuru and seized four bar-headed geese and other migratory birds. He was booked under sections of Wildlife Protection Act (WPA) 1972 for illegally possessing bar-headed geese. The species falls under Schedule 2 of the WPA.
In January this year, Darshan was accused of partying at Jetlag Restobar located in Rajajinagar in Bengaluru with other artists crossing the 1 am deadline. It was alleged that a party was underway to celebrate the success of the Darshan-starrer Kaatera. The police filed the charge sheet in April.
Though his father had worked in Kannada film industry, acting in more than 100 movies, Darshan’s journey to Sandalwood started off as a light boy who went on to become assistant for veteran cinematographer B C Gowrishankar. By 2011 he became an established actor with a massive fan base. He also gave voice to many of the Kannada cartoon shows.
Darshan’s first acting role came in S Narayan’s TV serial and later he worked in movies as a supporting character. His major breakthrough came in 2001 when the movie Majestic, where he played the hero became a massive hit. He continued to give back-to-back hits, earning him the nickname ‘Box Office Sultan’.
