A 26-year-old student of Bengaluru’s Azim Premji University, who was pursuing a Masters’ degree in Development Studies, collapsed and died Friday while taking part in the varsity’s annual cultural fest.

Police said Abhijit Shinde was first attended to by a doctor from the campus and later taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Police said the cause of death is unclear so far.

A police official said: “The post-mortem was completed on Saturday. The report will be out on Monday. Until then, we cannot ascertain the cause of the death.” A complaint of unnatural death has been registered at the Sarjapur Police Station.

The university said in a statement: “We are shocked and saddened by the unfortunate demise of a student at the university campus. The student, while participating in the opening event of the annual student festival, collapsed and, despite immediate medical help, could not be saved. Our hearts go out to his family and friends who knew and loved him. We are doing everything possible to support his immediate family at this time of grief.”

A source in the university said that Shinde had on February 22 participated in a hunger strike called by students to protest shuttle service charges levied upon them.

The university administration, too, said in a statement: “The deceased student was not on hunger strike on February 23, Thursday or February 24, Friday. We request that we respect the family’s privacy during this time.”
