41-yr-old held for ‘sending’ threat letters to writers in Bengaluru

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Bengaluru police arrested a 41-year-old Davangere-based activist of right-wing Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) for allegedly sending “anonymous threat letters” to several writers and scholars in the state over the last two years.

The Bengaluru police constituted the SIT on the directions of the state police chief Alok Mohan after writers approached Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over several of them receiving anonymous, threatening and abusive letters. Seven police complaints had been filed by renowned writers, the CMwas told. The SIT, Central Crime Branch announced on Saturday that they had traced, arrested the person who had been writing the threat letters, on September 28.  “The suspect has been identified as Shivaji Rao Jadhav, 41, a school dropout,” police sources said.

Jadhav was a Davangere region office bearer of the HJV, and targeted progressive writers for their criticism of superstitious practices and irrational customs in the Hindu religion, police said.
