More than 101 years after Sunder Singh Majithia became the first president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), his great-grandson Bikram Singh Majithia is facing the biggest crisis in the family’s political history.
Two years before SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal joined politics, her brother Bikram Singh Majithia was the youngest leader of Majha to get elected as an MLA from Majitha in 2007. Unlike Adesh Partap Singh Karion, who first became MLA in 1997 and married Sukhbir Singh Badal’s sister, Majithia didn’t remain confined to his constituency and soon earned the tittle of ‘Majhe Da Jarnail’ in the ranks and files of SAD.
Majithia’s rapid rise – at one point, he was even talked of as potential CM candidate – troubled senior SAD leaders such as Ranjit Singh Brahmpura and Rattan Singh Ajnala who eventually quit the party. Senior SAD leaders would often go to Badal senior to complain against Majithia. But Majithia was stoppable. In 2017, when the party lost all seats except two in Majha, Majithia won handsomely.
On January 6, 2014, Jagdish Singh Bhola, the alleged kingpin of a Rs 1,000-crore drug racket, told reporters at a Mohali court during his trial that Majithia was also involved in the case.
Seven years later, the Punjab Police registered a case against Majithia and booked him under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
