Three areas in Gandhinagar have reported cholera outbreak with four confirmed cases and six more suspected cases. Gandhinagar collector Mehul Dave on Friday declared the three areas and a two-kilometre radius of the outbreak epicentre as ‘cholera-affected’ under the Epidemic Diseases Act.

The three areas are Dahegam urban area near the state transport depot, Kalol and Moti Shiholi village, according to Gandhinagar Epidemic Medical Officer Dr Vikram Solanki.

Two children — aged 4 years old and 3 years old — from Dahegam were admitted at GMERS Hospital in Gandhinagar on May 28 after they had diarrhoea.

Subsequent stool sample tests confirmed cholera, Dr Solanki said, adding that both of them are stable and are expected to be discharged in a couple of days. “It is suspected that contaminated drinking water could have been the cause. We conducted a field survey of the cholera-affected area in Dahegam and have notified four other suspected cases. We have stopped the water supply and are providing drinking water through water tankers in the area,” added Dr Solanki. In Kalol, a 70-year-old woman was admitted at GMERS and a survey in the area has resulted in detection for two more suspected cases, added Dr Solanki. The source is suspected to be contaminated food from roadside vendors.

In Moti Shiholi village, a four-year-old girl was detected with cholera. She was discharged on Saturday. No other suspected case has been reported from the village so far.
