Two dead after speeding car hits scooter in Ahmedabad; 20-year-old college student arrested

Two men travelling on a scooter were killed after being hit by a speeding car near the Jhansi Ki Rani statue in Nehrunagar area of Ahmedabad on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.

The incident took place around 1.30am when Akram Altaf Qureshi (22) and Ashfaq Jafar Ajmeri (35), both residents of Jamalpur, were travelling from Nehrunagar towards Shivrangini crossroads. They were allegedly hit by a car near the Jhansi Ki Rani BRTS bus stand, said police.

The driver of the car, 20-year-old Rohan Paresh Soni, has been arrested.

“He was driving his car at full speed and in a reckless manner, hitting the Activa and throwing both of them on the road. Akram died on the spot and an injured Ashfaq was also declared dead by the doctor on duty at GMER Sola Civil Hospital at 5.20 am,” said a statement from the Traffic police.

Videos of the incident shows the scooter in a completely mangled condition. The scooter was hit with such force that it broke the BRTS corridor fence, landing the two-wheeler and the duo at the gates of Jhansi Ki Rani bus stand in the BRTS corridor running down the middle of the Nehrunagar road.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Traffic (West), Neeta Desai told mediapersons on Monday afternoon that Rohan, the driver of the Brezza SUV in question, is a second year college student. The vehicle is registered in the name of his mother Nimisha Paresh Soni.

Police are also investigating if more than one car was involved in the accident.
