State board panel to study feasibility of making Class X exam optional

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board...

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has decided to form a committee to explore the possibilities of implementing the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 2005,which suggests to make Class X board exam optional.

The decision was taken at a meeting on Thursday. The committee will have 15 members and submit its report two months after its formation.

GSHSEB Secretary R I Patel said on Friday,“The chairman of the Broad will decide on who the 15 members will be. The committee will also submit its report on how to go about making the exams optional in case it does recommend so.”

The committee members will meet all stakeholders to prepare the report, while suggestions can also be given on the board’s website.

Another proposal made at the meeting was to write ‘Pass’ instead of ‘Grade III’ in the pass certificates of Class X and XII students who clear the re-examination in July.

The eligibility for the post of school principals is also likely to be increased from the present five years to 10 years. The committee will also seek an answer as to whether the names of those in the top-10 list be published in the result booklet and whether Class X and XII (Science) should have a semester system.
