Extremely poor results in the first semester exams of the diploma engineering students of state’s 90 colleges last week have become a matter of concern for the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) authorities.

The authorities are trying to find out the reasons the poor performance by the diploma students and planning some steps to improve the standard of diploma engineering education in the state.

Hardly 20 per cent of 45,000 first semester students, who took the examinations, have been reported to have cleared their exams in all the subjects.

But failure of the students will not come in the way of their promotion to the second semester. They will automatically be promoted to the second semester and will have to clear all the back papers to be eligible to get the pass certificate on completion of their diploma course.

However, the results of 28 government diploma colleges are stated to be slightly better than that of 52 self-financed colleges.
