Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to lay the foundation stone of Gandhi Ashram Memorial & Precinct Development project — jointly implemented by the state and Central governments at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore — on March 12.

Confirming the development, a senior official connected with the project said, “The Prime Minister will be at Sabarmati Ashram between 10 am and 11.30 am on March 12. Union Home Minister Amit Shah may also join the event, but so far, there is no official confirmation about his participation”. An official announcement of the programme will be made on Monday, the official added.

The PM is going to attend the function at the open ground next to Abhay Ghat, close to Hriday Kunj.

The Gujarat government has formed the Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust (MGSAMT) — a registered trust — to implement the project.

According to a state Government Resolution, the trust/society has been empowered to “formulate a scheme or schemes” for carrying out any of the objectives of this society and for the management of MGSAMT.

As part of the project, more than 250 families — most of whom are descendants of those who Mahatma Gandhi had brought to his Ashram that was established in 1917 – have been rehabilitated.

Official sources said that barring two families, whose court matters are pending related to their rehabilitation, all others have been rehabilitated.
