The Surat Police seized three country made revolvers worth Rs 1.5 lakh and arrested a man, whose father had died in the 1993 Mumbai share market bomb blast, on Friday night. The police claimed that the accused had been in possession of the firearms since his father’s death around 31 years ago.

Acting on a tip-off, sleuths of the Special Operation Group (SOG) raided a flat at the Ambika apartment in the Dumbhal area of Limbayat in Surat on Friday night. During the search, the three firearms were found wrapped in a cloth bag hidden in a trunk in the kitchen.

When questioned, the house owner, Mehul Nareshchandra Thakker, 51, failed to give proper documents or produce a firearm license following which, he was arrested under the Arms Act and brought to the police station for further questioning.

Talking to The Indian Express, Surat SOG police inspector H R Chaudhary said, “After preliminary questioning, Thakker disclosed that earlier they used to live in the Virar area of Mumbai and his father Nareshchandra worked in a firm in the share market office building.”

He added, “In 1993, Dawood Ibrahim and his men had carried out a bomb blast in the share market building in which his father died. Later, communal riots broke out in the area. Thakker said that he was around 20 years old and one day, while he was returning to his home after some work, he found a cloth bag with something lying inside it. To his shock, when he opened the bag, he found three country made revolvers. He brought it home and hid it without disclosing it to anybody.” The police have not recovered any cartridge.

The police said Thakker shifted from Mumbai to Surat and started staying in the Dumbhal area of Limbayat and started driving an auto-rickshaw to earn a living.

Chaudhary said, “We have contacted the Mumbai crime branch and are trying to get the list of names of those who had died in the share market bomb blast. Thakker does not have any criminal background in Surat. We have also sought details from Mumbai crime branch to know whether any criminal case has been registered against him.”
