Vipul alias Neel Vishnu Parmar, accused of killing a 25-year-old man and stabbing his woman friend early morning on September 20, was shot dead in an alleged police encounter after he  “snatched a gun from a cop and shot at police” when he was taken to the crime scene near Ambapur village along the Narmada canal in Adalaj, Gandhinagar, on Wednesday, police said.

The alleged encounter took place when the Local Crime Branch (LCB) personnel of the Gandhinagar Police were conducting a crime scene reconstruction, police said.

An LCB constable, Rajendrasinh, was injured in the encounter. He underwent a surgery at Apollo Hospital and remains under treatment.

Parmar was accused of attacking and killing Vaibhav Manvani during an alleged loot attempt at an isolated place along the Narmada canal when the 25-year-old was with a friend in his car around 1.15 am on Saturday. According to doctors, Manvani’s friend is stable after undergoing surgery at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.

Speaking at a press conference, Gandhinagar Range IG Virendra Yadav said: “The investigation into Vaibhav’s murder was handed over to the LCB after Vipul alias Neel Vishnu Parmar was arrested and handed over to Gandhinagar Police on Tuesday. When the LCB took Parmar to the crime scene for reconstruction of the events on Wednesday, he snatched a gun of police personnel and fired at the police, injuring LCB personnel Rajendrasinh. Parmar also fired at police vehicles.”

“In response, the LCB personnel opened fire and Parmar was shot dead. A 108 ambulance was called and the paramedics declared him dead. The FSL and Gandhinagar SP were informed immediately,” Yadav said, addressing mediapersons in presence of Gandhinagar SP Ravi Teja Vasamsetty.

When asked, Yadav did not say how many rounds of bullets were fired either by Parmar or by police. He said a panchnama will be prepared.

After the inquest, Parmar’s body was sent for postmortem on Wednesday evening, police said.

Parmar was arrested on Tuesday by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police from Kagdadi village in Tankara taluka of Rajkot district, three days after the crime in Adalaj. Parmar was handed over to Adalaj police who registered the FIR. Subsequently, the investigation of the case was handed over to the Gandhinagar LCB.

Inspector MS Gohel of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, whose team had apprehended Parmar from Rajkot, had told The Indian Express that Parmar had earlier been involved in at least one murder and another attempt to murder cases apart from several other loot cases. He had been released from Sabarmati Central Jail just a year ago, Gohel said.

On September 19 night, Vaibhav Manvani and his friends went out celebrating his birthday. They dropped a female friend near Tapovan Circle around 12.15 am and drove along the Narmada canal.  Parmar allegedly attacked Manvani and his friend when they were talking in the car at an isolated place near Ambapur village in Adalaj around 1.15 am. They tried to defend, but the attacker stabbed them with a sharp weapon. Manvani died on the spot. His friend, who also sustained injuries, managed to escape from the spot. About 15 minutes later, she borrowed a passerby’s phone and informed her father, police said.
