At least eight people died after a head-on collision between two cars on the Surendranagar-Ahmedabad highway early on Sunday evening.
The accident took place near Wadhwan town when a Swift Dzire, moving towards Surendranagar, and a Tata Harrier SUV headed to Ahmedabad collided around 3.40 pm, police said. The smaller car fell into a ditch on the side of the highway and caught fire, resulting in the death of all eight occupants – members of the same extended family, police added.
All occupants of the Swift Dzire were charred to death in the incident, said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) VB Jadeja, adding, “We have identified all the deceased persons by their belongings. However, we have also taken DNA samples for forensic confirmation.”
Those who lost their lives included Pratipalsinh Jagdishsinh Chudasama (35), his wife Riddhiba Chudasama (32), their 10-month-old daughter Divyashri Chudasama, and Pratipalsinh’s mother Kailashba Jagdishsinh Jamsinh Chudasama (60). Their relatives Meenaba Virendrasinh Sattubha Rana (49), Rajeshwariba Narendrasinh Sattubha Rana (52), Neetaba Bhagirathsinh Jadeja (58), and Divyaba Hardevsinh Jadeja (35) were also killed.
Police sources said the driver of the SUV had also died in the accident, taking the death toll to nine. However, this could not be confirmed at the time of going to print.
