BJP state unit’s Minority Wing president Dr Mohsin Lokhandwala was elected unopposed as the Gujarat Waqf Board chairman Friday. The post was lying vacant for the past 14 months.

He was elected unopposed by the eight members of the Waqf Board at a meeting held in Gandhinagar.

On November 7, 2023, the state government’s legal department had issued a notification over the appointment of five members — four from the BJP and one from the Congress — in the Gujarat Waqf Board.

“I have been associated with the BJP for long. Gujarat Waqf Board is an autonomous body and our party’s top leaders suggested my name as chairman that was accepted by all. The Gujarat Waqf has more than 14,000 registered properties. There is a lot of pending work in the board. My first priority is to clear the pending work. We will also check encroachments on Waqf properties and will take legal actions,” Dr Lokhandwala, a radiologist by profession, told The Indian Express.
