In a setback to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Gujarat, one of its five MLAs Bhupendra Bhayani on Wednesday resigned from his post and said he will join the BJP soon.
Bhayani was elected from the Visavadar constituency in the state’s Junagarh district and resigned from the post barely one year after the Assembly elections. In December last year, after hinting he might defect to the BJP, Bhayani had held a public meeting in his native village Bhesan in Junagadh to “clarify” he was not jumping ships.
On Wednesday, Bhayani tendered his resignation to Speaker Shankar Chaudhary in the Gujarat Assembly complex.
After tendering his resignation, Bhayani said, “Today, there is no post of even leader of Opposition. And therefore, there is nobody to raise pending issues in Gujarat”.
“I want to do development work for the people and my constituency. And therefore, I have resigned,” he added.
With Bhayani’s resignation, the number of AAP MLAs has come down to four in the 182-member Gujarat Assembly.
Meanwhile, three independent MLAs have pledged their support to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party which has a record-breaking 156 members in the House.
