State Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma on Monday spoke on various irregularities afflicting the education system, including the presence of ‘proxy teachers’ and scam in mutual transfer of teachers, in rural schools of the state. Chudasma said that the state government will put an end to these practices soon.
“Nowadays I am getting complaints from parents of children studying in government schools in rural areas that some teachers have been sending ‘proxy teachers’ to take classes. The proxy teachers get a paltry sum of Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 as salary per month while the teachers go out with their family on a pleasure trip. This is very shameful,” the minister said while launching a book titled Mental Health and Its Issues at the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in Surat.
“When we try to take strict steps, we get recommendations from different people to spare the erring teachers for one reason or other. At that time we are helpless, and we know that by saving such teachers, we are doing wrong,” he added.
The minister also spoke on various other irregularities afflicting the education system as a whole.
“We have also come across complaints of teachers producing fake medical certificates to get transfer to places of their choice. Some teachers take money for mutual transfers. We will definitely put an end to all these irregularities,” he said.
Stating that harassment of women and student suicides are twin blots on the society, Chudasma chose to link rising cases of suicides among students to education related problems by saying, “When there was burden less education, the incidents related to student suicides were less, and now when the education is burdensome the suicide of students have also gone high. There are two big dark spots in the society — incidents of student suicides and harassment of women.”
“Students should be narrated stories of famous persons who learnt from their failures and succeeded. The biographies of Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Swami Vivekanand and others should be narrated to students. This step will definitely work out. Students should be taught that failures are stepping stones to success and one should not be disheartened if he or she fails,” Chudasma added.
