Fraudulent insurance claims: A Special Judge for CBI cases in Ahmedabad sentenced two accused persons — Hasan Abu Soni, Partner of M/s. Marks Chemical & M/s SRJ Associates, and Sanjay Ramesh Chitre, Surveyor/Loss Assessor — to five years’ Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) with a total fine of Rs 17.2 lakh in a case of fraudulent insurance claims.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in a statement on Friday, said it had registered the instant case on January 30, 2003, against the then Senior Divisional Manager of New India Assurance Co Ltd (NIACL), Divisional Office, Navsari, and others. It was alleged that the then Senior Divisional Manager had entered into a criminal conspiracy in collusion with the now-sentenced persons and had sanctioned insurance claims based on forged documents, thus causing loss to the tune of Rs 4,41,145 and Rs 4,94,712 to the New India Assurance Co. Ltd. in two policies.

After the completion of an investigation, the CBI filed chargesheets on June 24, 2005.

During the trial, 38 prosecution witnesses were examined and 255 documents/exhibits were relied upon in support of the charges against the accused persons in the case of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery for cheating, and using forged documents as genuine to obtain insurance claims.

Charges against the Senior Divisional Manager were abated as he died during trial.
