An abduction and extortion accused, who was being transferred from a police station to Crime Branch headquarters, suffered a gunshot wound in his leg on Friday morning after he allegedly attempted to snatch the service revolver of a police inspector accompanying him, officers said.
The accused, Sangramsingh Rakeshsingh Sikarwar, was being moved from Ramol police station to the Crime Branch headquarters in Gaekwad Haveli when the incident took place.
Officers said that as Sikarwar attempted to snatch the weapon, a scuffle ensued during which two shots got fired. While one hit the vehicle, another went through Sikarwar’s right foot. He was rushed to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and administered treatment.
Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), Crime, Sharad Singhal said, “While driving through the Sabarmati Riverfront road, Sikarwar was sitting in the car with Inspector S J Jadeja and a constable on both sides. Another constable was in the front seat along with the driver. Sikarwar tried to snatch the service revolver of Jadeja and two rounds were fired in the struggle that ensued.”
Sikarwar, along with five others, had been booked for the abduction and extortion of Rs 52 lakh from a land broker in Ramol police station. The case was later transferred to the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB). The Crime Branch team was transferring the accused to its office in two different vehicles when the incident took place.
Sikarwar, a resident of Vastral in Ahmedabad and originally from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, has a total of nine criminal cases filed against him. These include violent crimes, mob violence, and extortion, as well as graver offences such as murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, and crimes under the Prohibition Act and Gujarat Police Act, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Crime, Ajit Rajian.
After the incident, he was booked in another case of attempt to murder and attacking a public servant.
