Embezzlement of Gulberg funds: Teesta Setalvad’s bail plea rejected, faces arrest

She is alleged to have embezzled funds meant for 2002 Gujarat riot victims.

Setalvad also contended that this was the fifth case registered against her in Gujarat because of her support to the riots victims.

A sessions court on Tuesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of activist Teesta Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand and three others in a criminal case in which she is alleged to have embezzled funds meant for 2002 Gujarat riot victims.

The rejection of anticipatory bail comes as a blow to the activist who is likely to be arrested by the Detection of Crime Branch, (DCB), Ahmedabad. A former resident of Gulberg Society had lodged an FIR against Teesta, her husband Anand, Tanvir Jafri, son of ex-Congress MP Ahsan Jafri, and two others.

According to the complainant, Teesta and other accused allegedly embezzled funds they generated by claiming that Gulberg Society will be converted into a “museum of resistance.” However, according to complainant, after collecting funds for more than Rs 1.5 crore the “museum” was never built.
