Several leaders and workers of the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were detained by the Ahmedabad City Police early on Monday before a public gathering addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his home state.
According to a statement by Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda, “The BJP government and the police are not taking steps against rapists, miscreants and murderers. Instead of doing their job, they detained Ahmedabad Congress President Sonal Patel, spokesperson Hemang Raval, SC Cell chief Hitendra Pithadiya, leaders Partivrajsinh Kathvadiya and Nagji Desai, and other Congress workers to dampen the voice of the public and create an atmosphere of fear.”
“Whither democracy?” the Congress asked in a statement, commenting on the detention of its leaders and workers.
Vijay Patel, the AAP Ahmedabad chief, said in a video statement, “Remember the historic day of August 25, 2015, when 25 lakh Patidars gathered at GMDC ground to make their representation and stood as a symbol of unity as descendants of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. By evening, 14 Patidar youths were murdered by the police. I bow to the martyrs.”
He said, “Today, PM Modi has visited Nikol in Ahmedabad. His visits have always been a joyous occasion but for the past several years, whenever PM Modi or (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah have come to Gujarat, AAP workers are detained by the police, or are put under house arrest. What are they afraid of? Our country is the world’s largest democracy. In this country, people and the opposition cannot even speak up? I condemn this action. This is no longer a democracy. It is an autocracy.”
