29-yr-old arrested with drugs worth Rs 28.35 lakh in Ahmedabad: DCB

A 29-year-old man was allegedly arrested with 18.905 kg of charas, worth Rs 28.35 lakh, by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) of Ahmedabad City Police near the Vastral Ring Road crossroads in Ahmedabad even as his accomplice managed to escape from the spot.

The accused, identified as Vivek Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, was arrested on Thursday. According to the DCB officials, the drug consignment had been procured from Kanpur and was to be delivered in Gujarat.

Based on confidential information, the DCB officials stopped the KIA SUV near the Vastral Ring Road crossroads and searched it, upon which they found the drugs hidden in the car’s bonnet.

The accused was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

A statement from the Crime Branch on Thursday said that Vivek Kumar, along with his friends Vimal Rajput and a third person named Ajay, had procured the drugs from Kanpur. At the time of the incident, Vivek Kumar and Vimal were present in the car, said the DCB.

While Rajput managed to escape the police, his wallet found in the car contained Nepalese currency notes, said the statement. Further probe into the matter is underway.
