The state government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose by 14 per cent in 2023-24 as opposed to the previous year, Finance Minister Kanu Desai informed the Assembly Thursday as he presented the Bill to amend the Gujarat Goods and Services Tax, 2017.
The state’s GST collection was Rs 64,132 crore in 2023-24, up from Rs 56,236 crore in 2022-23. At Rs 23,707 crore from April to July, the state government has already received more than one-third of its estimated gross GST collection target of Rs 72,506 crore in the current financial year.
Desai also highlighted that the number of taxpayers in the state grew by 135 per cent in the seven years after its launch. While the state had 5,08,863 tax payers at the time of GST launch in 2017, the numbers are at 12,01,270 as on July 31 this year.
Meanwhile, the Bill to amend the Gujarat Goods and Services Tax, 2017 was passed unanimously by the Assembly.
The Bill was necessitated to implement the recommendations of the GST Council and to maintain the uniformity in the applicability of the provisions of the Central GST Act.
“Various decisions have been taken by the GST Council in its 50th and 52nd meetings requiring amendments in the GST Laws. Accordingly, the CGST Act, 2017 has been amended by Parliament…With a view to implementing the recommendations of the GST Council as soon as possible and in order to maintain the uniformity in applicability of the provisions of the CGST Act, 2017 and the Gujarat GST Act, 2017,” a statement of objects and reasons for the Bill read.
