The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has made rides on the BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System) free for people aged 65 and above and the differently abled.
Until Friday, only those aged 75 could avail the free rides, while differently abled people were eligible for a 40% concession on fares.
Announcing the decision on Thursday, AMC Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said, “The aim is to make public transport more inclusive and accessible.”
Eligible citizens can now collect their free passes from two designated BRTS stations: Jhansi Ki Rani and Soni Ni Chali. Additionally, the AMC has introduced a digital option: commuters can scan a QR code and fill out an online form to receive their passes.
The BRTS is operated by the AMC’s Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), called the Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL) with the Mayor as its chairperson. The Standing Committee chairperson is the director.
The AJL operates on a 160-km route with 380 buses, on which around 2.20 lakh passengers ride daily.
