Two 18-year-old Veraval youths who ventured into a “lake-like waterbody” drowned Sunday as incessant rains continued to pound the Saurashtra districts on Sunday.
Alfas Amin and Danish Garaf Khokhar, both residents of Shahigara Colony of Veraval, drowned in the rain water filled in an open bay-like area next to Mehek School. “They went to take a bath in this waterlogged lake-like waterbody. There must have been pits that they were not aware of, leading to their drowning,” Gir Somnath Collector D D Jadeja told The Indian Express.
The bodies were recovered by locals and the fire brigade. The deaths also caused an uproar among locals. “We have issued warnings and alerts due to the heavy rainfall and have deployed police on the highways as well. Warnings are issued among locals to not venture near lakes and ponds. This is not a notified lake but water collected due to rains,” Jadeja added.
