India’s cybersecurity agency is investigating claims of what could potentially be a big data leak encompassing personal information related to millions of Indians, The Indian Express has learnt.

The information was leaked on Github as part of documents related to documents relating to Chinese cyber agencies. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In) is investigating whether the data in these documents is new or is collated from breaches in the past.

According to information that has been uploaded to Github, the leaked database claims to have information from across Indian institutions – both government and private. It claims to have data pertaining to the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), data of users of BSNL, and information with companies including Air India and Reliance.

“We are aware of some of the information that is being claimed to have been compromised. The CERT-In is currently investigating the claims,” said a senior IT Ministry official. So far the organisation has not made a headway, it is understood.

The IT Ministry did not respond to an immediate request for comment.
